Watch Size Guide

Case diameter changes how a watch wears more than any other measurement. This guide explains what the numbers mean so you can choose without handling the watch first.

Measure your wrist

Wrap a tape measure, or a strip of paper you can mark and measure afterwards, around your wrist just below the wrist bone. Keep it snug, not tight.

  • Under 16cm (6.3in) — slim wrist. Look at 34 to 38mm.
  • 16 to 18cm (6.3 to 7.1in) — average. Most of the range works; 38 to 41mm is the safe middle.
  • Over 18cm (7.1in) — broader wrist. 40 to 44mm will sit properly.

What each size reads as

Under 38mm

The classic dress proportion. Sits close, disappears under a cuff, and reads as considered rather than casual.

38 to 40mm

The middle ground, and the size most people are happiest with. Large enough to read easily, small enough to wear with a jacket.

41 to 44mm

Reads as a sports or tool watch. Needs a wider wrist to sit flat — on a slim wrist the lugs will overhang.

Beyond diameter

  • Lug-to-lug is how far the watch reaches across your wrist top to bottom. A short lug-to-lug lets a larger diameter wear smaller.
  • Case thickness decides whether it slides under a shirt cuff. Automatics are usually thicker than quartz.
  • Strap material changes the feel: a steel bracelet wears heavier than leather or fabric at the same diameter.
